{"id":33907,"date":"2023-02-12T10:35:57","date_gmt":"2023-02-12T10:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/carriers-opting-for-dearer-routes-to-avoid-attacks-in-south-africa"},"modified":"2023-02-12T10:57:31","modified_gmt":"2023-02-12T10:57:31","slug":"carriers-opting-for-dearer-routes-to-avoid-attacks-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/carriers-opting-for-dearer-routes-to-avoid-attacks-in-south-africa","title":{"rendered":"Carriers opting for dearer routes to avoid attacks in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican transporters on the Maputo-Durban route are using a \u201cmuch more expensive\u201d alternative route to reach their destination following attacks on vehicles in South Africa, Mozambican officials told Lusa on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are using Eswatini [former Swaziland] as an alternative route to get to Durban, but it is not an efficient way, it is much more expensive,\u201d said Francisco Mandlate, secretary-general of the Mozambique, South Africa and Associated Association, which brings together transporters, speaking to Lusa.<\/p>\n<p>At least six Mozambican vehicles, including a bus and a truck were burnt by assailants on the R22 road, between Hluhluwe and Mbazwana, in South Africa\u2019s KwaZulu-Natal province.<\/p>\n<p>The stretch is about 90 kilometres from the border and is part of the link used by several carriers between Maputo and Durban.<\/p>\n<p>According to the association, the alternative route is much more costly and \u201cbureaucratic,\u201d requiring Mozambican vehicles to travel 123 kilometres more to reach Durban.<\/p>\n<p>The Ponta de Ouro route, \u201cwas much more efficient,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, through Eswatini, \u201cpeople are forced to cross many borders\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are more stamps on the pages of passports,\u201d Francisco Mandlate said, alluding to the procedures for entry and exit between the three countries, including some fees applied at the border.<\/p>\n<p>Mozambican carriers are also complaining of a lack of passengers since the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of passengers has fallen. Our cars are leaving without passengers and our business is going bankrupt,\u201d said Francisco Mandlate.<\/p>\n<p>The Mozambique, South Africa and Associates Association also said that this was not the first time when foreigners, including Mozambicans, are prevented from working in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>They demanded therefore that the South African authorities apply measures to stop episodes that culminate in violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat country has never definitively resolved this type of problem.
