Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>In Mozambique the authorities are still dealing with the effects of the heavy rains that caused floods in the province of Maputo this week.<\/p>\n

Local sources reported that at least 2,400 families have been affected.<\/p>\n

The floods affected the Matola neighbourhood and the Boane district near the capital, Maputo.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur houses are full of water, we don\u2019t have anywhere to sleep. Our barn went with the rain, we have no food. People are being dragged with the water, there are a lot of houses in Caful, all are down with the water, there is no boat that can rescue those people, we are asking for help with helicopters or boats\u201d, pleaded Lurdes Sima\u0303o Dove, a flood victim rescued from Boane district.<\/p>\n

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the affected areas. The heavy rains caused the collapse of many homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom yesterday to today we rescued more than one hundred people and today we expect to rescue more than 300 people\u201d, added Adolfo Mate, First Secretary from Boane district.<\/p>\n

More flooding is expected in Maputo Province as water from flooded rivers in South Africa and Eswatini makes its way downstream.<\/p>\n

Four people have died in floods following days of incessant rains in southern Mozambique, the country\u2019s institute for risk management said on Saturday. The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) said the deaths happened around the capital Maputo, while 14 000 people were evacuated out of more than 30 000 people estimated to have been affected by the flooding.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still have many people to rescue, (but) we are using small boats,\u201d INGD director Luisa Meque told a news conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think that if we had helicopters we would be in a better position to respond to the emergency, but we don\u2019t,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The worst hit district is Boane, about 30 kilometres southeast of the oceanside capital Maputo.<\/p>\n

Some 4 000 houses flooded as two bridges collapsed and several roads were completely submerged.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur houses are full of water, we don\u2019t have anywhere to sleep. Our barn went with the rain, we have no food,\u201d said Lurdes Simao Dove, after she was rescued from Boane district.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are being dragged with the water, there are a lot of houses… all are down with the water,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

With more rains forecast in the coming days, the flooding is expected to worsen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe forecasts show that this rain will continue to fall until Monday, (and) we think that the situation of the river basins is critical,\u201d said the department of water resources chief Agostinho Vilanculos.<\/p>\n

He expressed fears that the main highway linking Maputo and the rest of the country in the north, risked being flooded.<\/p>\n

Mozambique, which lies downstream of several major river basins, and experiences intense rainfall and tropical cyclones, is regularly hit by devastating floods.<\/p>\n
