The Mozambican Federation of Road Transport Associations (FEMATRO) has postponed the entry into force of the new fares for semi-collective passenger transport from Monday to the 20th of this month.<\/p>\n

Three days after announcing a seven metical increase in \u2018chapa\u2019 fares by seven meticais, the Mozambican Federation of Associations of Road Transporters announced, this Sunday, that the date for entry into force will move from the 13th to the 20th of February.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be no longer be tariff hikes this Monday. We are still in talks with the Government in order to see what the increase would be for the metropolitan region. The Government has called on our members , arguing that there is no need for us to charge and we are waiting for its pronouncement next week. We think it\u2019s better to back off because we are not at war with the Government, we are simply negotiating\u201d, said Paulo Muthisse, spokesman for FEMATRO.<\/p>\n

The increase in fuel prices and operational costs for vehicle maintenance are the reasons given by carriers for the increase in passenger transport tariffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just the price of fuel, there\u2019s also the question of wages, the cost of tyres, lubricants, parts for repairing vehicles, among other aspects that make transport costs more expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

FEMATRO stated that it will pronounce itself, within a week, as soon as it has the Government\u2019s pronouncement, on the mechanisms for charging the new tariff for the semi-collective transport of passengers.<\/p>\n

According to the new chart announced by FEMATRO, the \u2018Chapa\u2019 fares will rise, in the metropolitan region of Maputo, from 12 to 19, from 15 to 22 and from 18 to 25 meticais.<\/p>\n
