Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Road connection between the Sanhantudzi and 3 de Fevereiro neighbourhoods in the town of Catandica ceased last night when a culvert on National Highway Number 7 (EN7) was washed out, cutting the road to Vanduzi in Manica and to the province of Tete.<\/p>\n

In addition to local traffic, the EN7 is important internationally for commercial connections between Mozambique and the port of Beira and hinterland countries such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and even the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n

Presently, light passenger and cargo vehicles as well as buses and trucks going from Tete to Manica and vice versa are stuck in both directions.<\/p>\n

Witnesses reported that a culvert was washed out by the extreme flows of rainwater, opening a deep crater in the middle of the road.<\/p>\n

One of the drivers stranded at the scene published a video requesting emergency intervention by the National Roads Administration (ANE) to either fill the crater or open a detour to allow traffic to resume.<\/p>\n

Local sources said that the location was already showing signs of instability, and the ANE had placed sandbags there in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent further erosion.<\/p>\n

Last night, however, the rain showed the inadequacy of the ANE\u2019s strategy and washed away the soil and sand bags, cutting the road in dramatic fashion.<\/p>\n
