Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Circulation on National Road Number Two (EN2) between Block 2 and the village of Boane in Maputo province has been provisionally restored.<\/p>\n

On Saturday afternoon (18-02), Governor of Maputo province Ju\u0301lio Parruque walked the Matola-Boane section of the road, which had been impassable since the 7th of this month as a result of rain and discharges from the Lesser Libombos dam.<\/p>\n

The governor\u2019s visit was timed to monitor flooding in Maputo province, in Boane district in particular.<\/p>\n

Governor Parruque confirmed that the section was passable, albeit only by vehicles with relatively high clearance such as 4x4s, vans and trucks.<\/p>\n

Governor Parruque spoke with road users, who professed themselves relieved with the reopening of the road.<\/p>\n

The official urged a National Roads Administration (ANE) team and members of the district government and the Municipal Council of Boane to continue cleaning the road and taking measures to speed up the clearing of water from the surface.<\/p>\n

Some light vehicles used the EN2 over the weekend, despite warnings signs and the water still covering the road some places.<\/p>\n

The town of Boane is 30 kilometres south of Maputo, but the road that connects it to the capital was cut by increased flow in the Umbeluzi river and other water courses between the 9th and 10th of February.<\/p>\n

Flooding is common in Mozambique at this time of year but, even so, rainfall has been higher than expected. In the week February 6th to 12th alone almost three times the monthly average fell, the Institute National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) announced.<\/p>\n

Floods in the Maputo region have caused at least nine deaths and affected around 40,000 people so far this rainy season, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD).<\/p>\n
