Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Speaking at the opening of the VII Ordinary Session of the 9th Legislature of the Assembly of the Republic (AR), Se\u0301rgio Pantie anticipated that the Frelimo parliamentary party would move for \u201ca constitutional amendment to avoid District Elections in 2024\u201d.<\/p>\n

The newspaper @Verdade has learned that the bills for the election of members of the District Assembly and the institutional framework of the districts have been cut from the list of matters to be considered.<\/p>\n

Echoing a decision hinted at during the 12th Frelimo Congress and facing a probable loss of political power with decentralization, Se\u0301rgio Pantie anticipated that the 184 Frelimo party deputies would approve \u201ca constitutional amendment to prevent the holding of these District Elections, thus safeguarding that the State machine does not become heavy, burdensome and conflicting\u201d, a constitutional amendment which everything indicates the government will submit to parliament.<\/p>\n

Speaking this Wednesday (22-02) in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic, the head of the Frelimo bench argued for postponing the 2024 district elections \u201cin view of the recent experience with the election of Provincial Governors and their respective Assemblies and the budget burden imposed upon us\u201d.<\/p>\n

@Verdade has learned that the bills relating to the election of members of the district assembly and to the institutional framework of the districts have been removed from the list of 32 agenda items initially listed for the VII Ordinary Session of the 9th Legislature of the Assembly of the Republic, which started this Wednesday.<\/p>\n

After the September 2022 Congress, Filipe Nyusi, head of state and president of the Frelimo party, announced the creation of \u201can election advisory group involving all the sensitivities of society (…) with the mission of carrying out a reasoned reflection on the pertinence or not of the District Elections in 2024, the result of which reflection will be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic for a final decision\u201d.<\/p>\n
