Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Vice President of the World Bank for Eastern and Southern Africa, Victoria Kwakwa, has evaluated positively the return of life to the streets of the towns of Palma and Mocimboa da Praia in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy with what I saw, it\u2019s encouraging to see vibrant economic activity in the markets, as well the construction, training of young people and agriculture\u201d, said Victoria Kwakwa, quoted by the German agency DW.<\/p>\n

Kwakwa visited the areas devastated by islamist terrorism since 2017. A major jihadist attack against Palma in March 2021 forced the suspension of the liquefied natural gas project run by a consortium headed by the French company TotalEnergies.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican defence and security forces, and their allies from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), freed Palma and the neighbouring district of Mocimboa da Praia from the terrorists, and investment is now resuming. TotalEnergies is now assessing the security and human rights situation before taking its final investment decision.<\/p>\n

The World Bank is supporting the provision of basic services to the residents.<\/p>\n

In her first visit to Mozambique, Kwakwa wants to talk about the government\u2019s reform plans, the causes of the country\u2019s weaknesses, and how to increase its resilience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is happening in northern Mozambique is very important, and I wanted to see the efforts at stabilization, which open the gates to major economic activities, such as the natural gas projects\u201d, said Kwakwa. \u201cThe World Bank is helping the residents gain access to better living conditions and essential basic services\u201d.<\/p>\n

Kwakwa is scheduled to meet with President Filipe Nyusi, the governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Rogerio Zandamela and other government leaders.<\/p>\n
