Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Maputo city yesterday saw two cases of cholera confirmed in its KaTembe municipal district, Maputo City councillor Alice Abreu has announced. The patients are recovering at home, the capital\u2019s health sector maintaining there is no need to hospitalize them, as their condition is stable.<\/p>\n

These are the first confirmed cases of cholera registered in the capital since the outbreak of the disease in September last year.<\/p>\n

The two cases were confirmed by the councillor for Health and Social Action after samples were tested in the previous two days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had five samples collected in the Chamanculo district, another two in KaMaxaquene, 13 in KaTembe. Of all the 24 samples collected, two were positive for cholera,\u201d De Abreu said.<\/p>\n

Of the positive cases, one is female and the other male, both aged between 21 and 25 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two patients are well and at home complying with measures that the health sector recommends for the sake of their health,\u201d De Abreu added.<\/p>\n

Although the confirmed cases were registered in KaTembe, the districts of KaMaxaquene, KaLhamaculo and KaMavota are of more concern in terms of the risk of outbreak and spread of the disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are making door-to-door visits [there], during which we emphasise three fundamental aspects of prevention, from the availability of running water and the way in which it is stored to the existence of proper toilets and, finally, the way in which families dispose of solid waste.\u201d<\/p>\n

To control the disease, people in a more serious condition will be taken to the Mavalane General Hospital, which has a capacity for over 50 cholera patients and will be used as a treatment centre.<\/p>\n

Alice de Abreu called for greater use of the rapid cholera test.<\/p>\n

Cholera has caused more than 100 fatalities nationwide.<\/p>\n
