Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozal majority shareholder South32 has donated US$700,000 [more than 44 million meticais] to support flood response and recovery efforts in the south of Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The donation was directed to Caritas, an international humanitarian organisation which is working to provide disaster relief in Mozambique following widespread flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Freddy.<\/p>\n

According to Noel Pillay, chief operating officer for South32, the impact for people living in communities close to the Mozal aluminium smelter was severe, \u201cwith approximately 6,000 hectares of agricultural land and more than 7,000 homes flooded\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of those impacted by the floods make their livelihoods from farming and agricultural activities,\u201d Pilay explained.<\/p>\n

South32\u2019s donation to Caritas will provide about 3,900 agricultural kits, including farming tools and 12,600 seed kits to help restore the livelihoods of those living in the Boane, Namaacha and Moamba districts of southern Mozambique.<\/p>\n

South32\u2019s Noel Pillay said: \u201cOur thoughts continue to be with those across Mozambique and Madagascar who have been impacted by Tropical Cyclone Freddy\u201d.<\/p>\n

Pillay thanked the agencies and non-governmental organisations providing humanitarian aid and disaster recovery support, explaining that this donation, in addition to supporting long-term recovery, would help revive agricultural activity and other means of livelihood, as well as providing food to 1,000 vulnerable families.<\/p>\n
