Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Road accidents killed 798 people in Mozambique in 2022, 146 less than in the previous year, in which 944 people lost their lives, according to data released by Mozambique\u2019s Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Beatriz Buchili.<\/p>\n

Buchili disclosed the figures during her annual report on legality and criminality to the Assembly of the Republic on Tuesday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Most fatalities occurred in Maputo province, with 151 fatalities, followed by Gaza province, with 115 deaths, according to the document presented by the PGR.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scenario that the country is experiencing in terms of road accidents demands a greater combination of efforts, namely, civic education actions, reinforcement of inspection, improvement of roads and, above all, raising the awareness of the driver and pedestrian for strict compliance with traffic rules,\u201d Buchili stressed.<\/p>\n

The PGR also noted that corruption among the inspecting agents also encourages the transgressions that result in road accidents.<\/p>\n

Driving schools, she continued, must ensure quality training, so that drivers acquire the skills to ensure safe behaviour on the roads.<\/p>\n

The PGR also informed deputies about an exponential increase in deaths in Mozambican waters, with the registration of 178 deaths in maritime, lake and river accidents over the last year, against 94 in 2021.<\/p>\n
