Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Camo\u0303es Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo and Arte d\u2019Gema Gallery have teamed up with a group of 30 Mozambican artists who have donated works for this sales-exhibition to help a colleague in the Mozambique arts community.<\/p>\n

Artists associated with this cause include Butcheca, Celestino Mudaulane, Ciro, Datinho, Dito Tembe, Famo\u0301s, Gemuce, Gonc\u0327alo Mabunda, I\u0301dasse, Joa\u0303o Donato, Jorge Dias, Ju\u0301lio Dengucho, Lizette Chirrime, Lui\u0301s Cardoso, Lui\u0301s Santos, Lui\u0301s Sozinho, Mapfara, Mariano Silva, Mateus Sithole, Mauro Pinto, Moise\u0301s Sambo, Mulalene, Pedro Mourana, Pekiwa, Samuel Djive, Saranga, Se\u0301rgio Simione, Simone Simbine, Thandi Pinto, Tsenani and Ulisses.<\/p>\n

The exhibition, dedicated to raising funds to address the health problem of the artist Lizette Chirrime, will run until the 20th of May at the Camo\u0303es gallery (open Monday to Saturday, between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm).<\/p>\n

Lizette Chirrime was born in Angoche (Nampula), Mozambique, in 1973 and grew up in Maputo, where she attended the Commercial School until she was 17.<\/p>\n

Creating works of art using painting and sewing was always on of Chirrime\u2019s preoccupations, although she never received any formal art education. In 2004, she held her first solo exhibition in Mozambique entitled \u2018Metamorfoses de Saco\u2019. In 2005, she attended a three-month residency at Greatmore Studios, Cape Town, which established her first connection with South Africa.<\/p>\n

Chirrime has lived and worked in Cape Town for the last 15 years, having presented several solo exhibitions, such as, in 2012, her second solo exhibition, \u2018A Sinfonia da Alma Liberta\u2019 in Mozambique and, in 2016, \u2018A Sinfonia da Alma Liberta II\u2019, in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Two years later, she presented \u2018The Forms of Invisible Demands\u2019, also in South Africa, and in 2020, \u2018Mothers Gift\u2019, also in South Africa<\/p>\n

Chirrime returned to Mozambique in 2021, and now lives in Inhambane. The same year, she presented her sixth solo exhibition, \u2018O Livro de Ndimande\u2019.<\/p>\n

She has in the course of her career participated in several group exhibitions in Germany, Norway, Portugal, France, South Africa, in addition to Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Lizette Chirrime creates large-scale textile works. These consist of the combination of abstract forms represented in a collage of printed \u2018tshwe-tshwe\u2019 fabrics and other African prints associated with women\u2019s clothing. The interplay between textiles, abstraction and art as a therapeutic and spiritual tool makes Chirrime\u2019s art unique and distinctly African.<\/p>\n

Lizette Chirrime has frequently presented her work in group and individual exhibitions, nationally and internationally. Her works are represented in several public and private collections. She was a finalist for Bright Young Things 2017, the Art Africa\u2019s award and residency programme to support and celebrate contemporary vanguards.<\/p>\n
