Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The strategic partner for the Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric dam construction project in Tete province will be presented next week, the Council of Ministers announced this Tuesday (02-05).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe announcement of the selected bidder will be made very soon, between the 10th and 12th of May of this year, 2023,\u201d spokesperson for the Council of Ministers\u2019 meeting, Filima\u0303o Suaze, said.<\/p>\n

Suaze added that the report had been completed by April 28th and sent to the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy before being presented to the Council of Ministers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn evaluation committee must complete the various stages of its work by May 5th,\u201d Suaze said.
\nThe Evaluation Committee is chaired by the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy and comprises representation from EDM, HCB, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Land and Environment, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Bank of Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Two international consortia comprising seven companies are bidding for the Mphanda Nkuwa project. One involves ETC Holdings, ZESCO Limited, CECOT (Mota-Engil subsidiary) and PetroSA (subsidiary of Central Energy Fund, South Africa), and the other Electricite\u0301 de France (EDF), Total Energies and Sumitomo Corporation.<\/p>\n

Among the institutions that have shown interest in financing the project are the World Bank, the International Financial Corporation, the French Development Agency, the African Development Bank, the European Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank and the International Development Association.<\/p>\n

The strategic partner for the financing, construction and operation of this power generation undertaking will be responsible for investing between US$500 and US$700 million corresponding to the proportion of its participation in the total investment, estimated at US$4.5 billion, including the high voltage power transmission line from Tete and Maputo.<\/p>\n

With an estimated cost of US$4.5 billion, the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project includes the development of a run-of-river dam on the Zambezi River in Tete province 61 km downstream of Cahora Bassa, a 1,500-Megawatts hydroelectric plant and a 1,300-kilometre high-voltage power transmission line from Tete to Maputo.<\/p>\n

The deadline for the submission of technical, economic and financial development proposals from the companies bidding to be the strategic partner of the Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project closed on the 10th March, 2023<\/p>\n
