Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Maputo have detained three individuals after finding more than two million meticais hidden in the doors of a light vehicle. That\u2019s more than US$3,425. at current exchange rates<\/p>\n

The seizure took place in the Zimpeto neighbourhood, on the outskirts of the capital, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

According to PRM spokesperson Leonel Muchina, the successful operation occurred thanks to a tipoff concerning the suspicious movement of a light vehicle leaving the centre of the country, with cash hidden in the door lining.<\/p>\n

Muchina said that, in order to minimise unwanted attention at police road blocks, the individuals responsible had decided to rent a heavy vehicle with a trailer, on which the light vehicle would be transported, so as to avoid inspections while on route.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolice stopped the vehicle when it arrived in Zimpeto, and found sums of money worth more than two million meticais,\u201d Muchina said.<\/p>\n

There are indications that part of the money was stolen at the BCI bank raid in Quelimane, Zamb\u00e9zia province, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe individuals say that they came from Nampula, while others speak of Sofala province, but all this information is to hide their true origin, which there are signs of being Zambezia province, specifically Quelimane,\u201d Muchina elaborated.<\/p>\n

Some of the money stolen from the BCI branch in Quelimane last week was recovered in the city of Chimoio, Manica province, by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC). Eight million meticais was recovered.<\/p>\n
