Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A photograph by Biodiversity Offsets Program Coordinator at BIOFUND Mozambique Denise Nicolau has been awarded an honourable mention in the 2023 Biodiversity Photo Contest promoted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).<\/p>\n

Denise Nicolau\u2019s photograph is among the ten best photos in the contest, which marked International Biological Diversity Day [May 22].<\/p>\n

\u201cThese photos tell the story of USAID\u2019s biodiversity programming across nine key areas: food security; nature-based solutions to climate change; diversity, equity and inclusion; marine and fisheries; combating conservation crime; wildlife conservation; One Health; communities and conservation; and conservation enterprises,\u201d USAID comments in a communique.<\/p>\n

In her photograph, a man smiles while holding giant mushrooms that he collected in Licuati Forest Reserve, an area with strong cultural value for local communities of the Matutuine region in Maputo province.<\/p>\n

Mozambique, USAID and BIOFUND are helping these communities explore new and innovative financing mechanisms to support biodiversity conservation and promote community development.<\/p>\n

An enthusiastic photographer of wildlife and conservation themes, Denise Nicolau is a biologist with a M.Sc. degree in Coastal Ecosystems and Aquatic Biology from Eduardo Mondlane University, and is a coordinator of the Biodiversity Offsets Program at BIOFUND.<\/p>\n
