Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The EU data protection chief on Tuesday said the bloc’s migration policy has become \u201chostage to political interests\u201d and employs double standards.<\/p>\n

In a blog post marking World Refugee Day, European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiorowski warned EU agencies and EU governments to respect \u201cfundamental rights provided by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Wiewiorowski, the bloc\u2019s \u201cmigration has become instrumentalized; hostage to political interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBorder management differs across the EU: there are better and worse borders in the EU, with different standards, where the EU\u2019s role differs, with different readings of the law,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Wiewiorowski reminded that the EU \u201chas shown that we can\u201d when it welcomed millions of Ukrainian refugees fleeing Russia’s war, but \u201cit has also shown that it depends\u201d where and why the asylum-seekers are coming from.<\/p>\n

Despite \u201cunfavorable political realities,\u201d he called on the EU to \u201ccontinuously strive to uphold its values and principles at its borders\u201d since it is \u201ca legal obligation\u201d and \u201cnot a question of generosity.\u201d<\/p>\n

His remarks come days after at least 81 people died after a fishing boat carrying asylum-seekers and migrants sank off the southern coast of Greece, one of the deadliest such disasters this year.<\/p>\n

Many others were rescued, but the fatality count is expected to rise as survivors said the vessel was carrying more than 600 migrants, mainly from Pakistan, Egypt and Syria.<\/p>\n

According to human rights watchdogs, the Greek coast guard might have ignored SOS signals of the boat while some survivors accused the Greek authorities to be directly involved in the accident.<\/p>\n
