Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Residents of the main town of Metangula, in Niassa, have been deprived of piped water since May, due electricity supply at the water collection and treatment station being interrupted.<\/p>\n

The president of the Municipal Council of Metangula, Sara Mustafa, said that a debt, estimated at 265,000 meticais for two months\u2019 supply of electricity, is at the origin of the cut in supply.<\/p>\n

The water supply system in Metangula town has 675 connections, with a fixed payment rate of 300 meticais, which represents a monthly income of just over 200,000 meticais.<\/p>\n

Without even advancing the amount, Mayor of Metangula Sara Mustafa said that residents do not pay their water bills, which makes it difficult for the municipality to manage the system in terms of power costs and other consumables.<\/p>\n

Radio Mozambique learned from Electricidade de Moc\u0327ambique (EDM) that Metangula municipality close to 293,000 meticais for electricity supplied from January to May this year.<\/p>\n

According to EDM, Metangula\u2019s average monthly electricity bill for its water supply system is 60,000 meticais.<\/p>\n

Metangula residents, who do not agree there is a culture of not paying water bills, say that the interruption in the supply of piped water forces them to use water from Lake Niassa, with all the health risks that entails.<\/p>\n
