Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican artist Pekiwa at 6:00 pm this Thursday, June 22nd, opens a one-man exhibition entitled \u2018Filhas do Mar [Daughters of the Sea]\u2019 at the Camo\u0303es \u2013 Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo.<\/p>\n

The exhibition presents new works created over the last two years. Pekiwa develops his work using wooden materials that he collects and acquires on the Island of Mozambique, as well as used iron that he finds on a daily basis, especially among urban scrap in the province of Maputo.<\/p>\n

\u2018Filhas do Mar\u2019 also highlights the natural erosion of materials by the sea.<\/p>\n

The exhibition expresses concerns prompted by the artist\u2019s journey, and brings to attention the need to protect the environment and respect biodiversity, highlighting especially the protection of sea turtles.<\/p>\n

Christened Nelson Ferreira, Pekiwa was born in Maputo in 1977 and has been sculpting since childhood, having initially worked with his father, the sculptor Govane.<\/p>\n

He has participated in several national and international group exhibitions since 1991, his journey towards individual exhibitions beginning in 2002.<\/p>\n

His work is represented in public and private collections in Mozambique, Portugal, South Africa, Botswana, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Senegal, Spain, Netherlands, USA, England, Japan, Italy and Australia.<\/p>\n

\u2018Filhas do Mar\u2019 will run at the Camo\u0303es \u2013 Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo until August 31st, from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.<\/p>\n
