Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican president, Filipe Nyusi, on Friday called on the country to show \u201cresilience\u201d in maintaining peace and promoting national reconciliation, noting that the \u201cbloodshed among Mozambicans must be moved to the past\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the same conviction of resilience,\u201d peace and national reconciliation \u201cis a path that must be continued by every Mozambican, Nyusi said.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican head of state was speaking in Maputo during a speech at the official ceremony to close the disarmament and demobilisation phase of the armed wing of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, after the closure of the movement\u2019s last guerrilla base on the 15th.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that we still have a long road of reconciliation ahead of us, perhaps more difficult, which will require everyone\u2019s understanding. We Mozambicans will continue to follow this path,\u201d stressed Mr Nyusi.<\/p>\n

Calling the closure of the last Renamo base in the Gorongosa Mountains in Sofala province an \u201cepic\u201d moment, Nyusi stressed that dialogue between the country\u2019s leaders must continue, because \u201cpeace and national reconciliation are not a finished product\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the coming months and years, our attention will focus on reconciliation and the full reintegration of the beneficiaries of DDR [Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration],\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

The head of state urged communities not to harass former Renamo guerrillas, aiming for national reconciliation and the contribution of former fighters in the country\u2019s economic development process.<\/p>\n

Filipe Nyusi pointed to the fixing of survivor pensions for former guerrillas as part of the government\u2019s commitment to national reconciliation.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the decision marks a rare situation in which people who have never paid social security contributions will benefit from pensions.<\/p>\n

He went on to say that Mozambicans are showing that they want to leave military hostilities in the past and rely on dialogue to resolve their differences.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can disagree, as happens in any family, but we have to engage in dialogue in order to overcome our differences,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In this sense, he argued that the country should invest in \u201cmechanisms of national reconciliation\u201d, so that Mozambicans do not turn against each other in the future.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s act is part of the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement signed between the government and Renamo in August 2019.<\/p>\n

The understanding was the third between the two parties, the first two having been violated and resulted in armed confrontation following the main opposition party\u2019s contestation of the election results.<\/p>\n

Under the DDR, 5,221 Renamo guerrillas returned home.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s ceremony was attended by heads of state of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) namely Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe and Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, by the Minister of Defence of Rwanda Juvenal Marizamunda, representing President Paul Kagame, by representatives of the United Nations, including Cristina Duarte and Mirko Manzoni, and by the diplomatic corps accredited in Maputo, among other guests.<\/p>\n
