Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The United Nations on Friday said that Mozambique\u2019s political dialogue for peace represents a \u201cray of hope\u201d in the face of multiple crises in the world, praising the African country\u2019s leadership\u2019s commitment to inclusiveness.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world is in crisis\u201d and \u201cin the face of this gloomy scenario, Mozambique\u2019s political dialogue for peace has become a ray of hope,\u201d said Cristina Duarte, representative of the United Nations Secretary-General at the ceremony marking in Maputo the end of the disarmament and demobilisation process of the armed arm of Resiste\u0302ncia Nacional Moc\u0327ambique (Renamo), the main opposition party.<\/p>\n

\u201cMozambique has demonstrated that conflicts can be resolved peacefully, through honest, open and politically inclusive dialogue,\u201d said Duarte.<\/p>\n

The representative of Anto\u0301nio Guterres referred in particular to the government\u2019s commitment to pay pensions to former Renamo guerrillas as an act that reflects the will for social inclusion and national reconciliation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision to extend the pension system to the demobilised is an act of reconciliation and a decisive step towards nation building,\u201d she emphasised.<\/p>\n

Cristina Duarte stressed that the measure is an important contribution to the consolidation of peace in Mozambique and serves as inspiration for other countries seeking to end armed conflict.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s act is the culmination of the closure on the 15th of the last base of Renamo\u2019s armed wing and is part of the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) process provided for in the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement signed in August 2019.<\/p>\n

The agreement was the third signed between the government and Renamo, the first two having been breached and resulted in armed confrontation following the main opposition party\u2019s contestation of the election results.<\/p>\n

Under the DDR, 5,221 Renamo guerrillas have returned home.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s ceremony was attended by heads of state of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) namely Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe and Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana, by the Minister of Defence of Rwanda Juvenal Marizamunda, representing President Paul Kagame, by representatives of the United Nations, including Cristina Duarte and Mirko Manzoni, and by the diplomatic corps accredited in Maputo, among other guests.<\/p>\n
