Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The first quarter of 2023 was characterised by an increase in the number of ships calling at the Port of Nacala, in the province of Nampula, due to a change in the rules for berthing vessels.<\/p>\n

Without giving figures, the director of the Port of Nacala, Neimo Induna, told \u2018Noticias\u2019 that the increase in maritime traffic had obliged management to dedicate one pier exclusively to containers, allowing Mozambican shipping lines to increase the number of calls.<\/p>\n

According to Induna, the increase in container ship calls is also due to the reduction in freight globally , as well as the fact that there is no longer a shortage of containers such as that caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

In Nacala port\u2019s three terminals, dedicated to containers, general cargo and liquid bulk, there was a global record of 646,816 metric tons, against 583,107 tons in the same period of 2022, representing a growth of 10.9%.<\/p>\n

However, some business operators have complained about theft in the port, with containers broken into. Induna said the situation was being brought under control by the introduction of additional security measures.<\/p>\n

According to the official, security at the Port of Nacala would soon improve further with the completion of perimeter fencing and gates and the installation of CCTV cameras.<\/p>\n

Induna also remarked that the international situation, especially the war between Russia and Ukraine, is impacting the global market and the city of Nacala in particular. Imports of wheat in bulk and fertilizers were affected, although some customers had found alternative solutions.<\/p>\n
