Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s president has thanked the envoy of UN Secretary-General, Mirko Manzoni, for his support in the peace process in Mozambique, highlighting the key role of the contact group in promoting reconciliation in the country, the presidency announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe group has played a key role in promoting peace, reconciliation and stability throughout Mozambique since its creation,\u201d Filipe Nyusi said, quoted in a statement from the presidency.<\/p>\n

The last base of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition party, was closed in Vunduzi, Gorongosa district, in the central province of Sofala, on 15 June, marking the end of the disarmament and demobilisation process of the party\u2019s guerrillas.<\/p>\n

For the Mozambican head of state, the efforts of the contact group for peace, led by Mirko Manzoni, were \u201ccrucial\u201d during the process, encouraging the parties to stay on the \u201cright track\u201d, as well as mobilising \u201cmuch needed\u201d resources to move the negotiations forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recent conclusion of the disarmament and demobilisation activities is one of the results on which we are immensely proud as a nation,\u201d Filipe Nyusi stressed.<\/p>\n

The president of Mozambique thanked each of the members of the contact group for their commitment, suggesting that they \u201ccontinue to collaborate with donors\u201d as the reintegration phase continues.<\/p>\n

Mirko Manzoni, then Switzerland\u2019s ambassador to Mozambique, was appointed in July 2019 by United Nations Secretary-General Anto\u0301nio Guterres to mediate peace talks between the Mozambican government and Renamo.<\/p>\n

The closure of the last Renamo base is part of the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement signed by the government and Renamo in August 2019, the third signed between the parties, the first two having been violated and resulted in an armed confrontation following the main opposition party\u2019s contestation of the election results.<\/p>\n

Under Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration, 5,221 Renamo guerrillas have returned home.<\/p>\n

The reintegration phase follows, which includes the start of pension payments to the demobilised.<\/p>\n
