Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Two writers from Mozambique Gibson Joa\u0303o and O\u0301scar Fanheiro won \u2018ex aequo\u2019 on Tuesday the Fernando Leite Couto Literary Award, created to promote young Mozambican authors, and will participate in the 2023 edition of FOLIO \u2013 International Literary Festival of O\u0301bidos.<\/p>\n

The jury\u2019s choice fell, in this edition of the award, on the works \u201c[Da casa]: o seu inclinado murmu\u0301rio\u201d \u2013 [From the house]: its inclined murmur\u201d, by Elvira Nhamane, pseudonym of Gibson Joa\u0303o, and \u201cInce\u0302ndios a\u0300 margem do soon\u201d (Fires at the edge of sleep), by Castigo Namussurize, pseudonym of O\u0301scar Fanheiro, O\u0301bidos town hall, and partner of the initiative, announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The jury considered that the work by 21-year-old Gibson Joa\u0303o was \u201ca book marked by a poetic maturity, which is tangled in a discursive mode in only one voice, rich and succinct\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe words stage an almost physical seduction in this book, or rather, the words seem to be incarnating in front of us, an artifice that clearly results from a continuous reading practice\u201d, says a press release in which the jury sustains the reasons for awarding the prize.<\/p>\n

As for O\u0301scar Fanheiro\u2019s book, it was considered a \u201cvisceral work, which reveals the author\u2019s sobriety in the structuring of the verses and in the extension of the emotion of the word\u201d. The jury highlighted the \u201cdisconcerting, incisive writing, in which the \u2018pimp\u2019 and the noble are mixed, the richest metaphors and the rudeness of the colloquial vigour, the dirty realism and some sublime images, in a polyphonic communication that, not being not always orchestrated with absolute adjustment, is of an undeniable aesthetic coherence and manifests itself in a freedom that should be an appanage of poets\u201d.<\/p>\n

The two books \u201care complementary to each other, given the solar character of \u201c[Da casa]: its inclined murmur\u201d and the nocturnal character of \u201cInce\u0302ndios a\u0300 margem do sono\u201d, a reason that justifies the \u2018ex aequo\u2019 awarding of the prize\u201d, explained the jury, composed of Anto\u0301nio Cabrita (poet, editor and critic), Francisco Guita Jr. (poet), Gilberto Matusse (literature professor at Eduardo Mondlane University and essayist), Jose\u0301 dos Reme\u0301dios (journalist and literary critic) and Lica Sebastia\u0303o (poet).<\/p>\n

The Fernando Leite Couto Prize, the father of writer Mia Couto, was established in 2017 with the aim of promoting and rewarding young Mozambican writers.<\/p>\n

Since 2021, it has had the partnership of Camo\u0303es \u2013 Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo, the Portugal Mozambique Chamber of Commerce (CCPM), O\u0301bidos City Council and Moza-Banco, which made it possible to award 150,000 meticais (approximately two thousand euros) to the winner.<\/p>\n

The winners of each edition also win the possibility of having their work printed by CCPM and will win a trip to Portugal to participate in FOLIO \u2013 International Literary Festival of O\u0301bidos, which this year takes place from 12 to 22 October.<\/p>\n

The authors will also perform in this town in the district of Leiria, a literary residence and, on their return to Mozambique, they will have the support of Camo\u0303es \u2013 Portuguese Cultural Centre, to divulge their works and guide literary workshops, in one of its delegations in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The \u2018ex aequo\u2019 awarding of the prize also ocurred last year, with the victory of Maya A\u0302ngela Macuacua, with the novel \u201cBlack diamonds amid crystals\u201d, and Jeremias Jose\u0301 Mendoso with the collection of tales \u201cWhen the owls hoot\u201d.<\/p>\n

The prize was, for the second year in a row, delivered at Folio \u2013 International Literary Festival of O\u0301bidos, in a panel of authors in which the two young writers participated.<\/p>\n

Previously the Fernando Leite Couto Prize had been awarded to Macvildo Pedro Bonde, with the book of poems \u201cDescription of Shadows\u201d, in 2017, and Otildo Justino Guido, with the work \u201cThe Silence of the Skin\u201d, in 2019.<\/p>\n
