Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican Transport Minister Mateus Magala on Friday expressed his satisfaction at the \u201csignificant gains\u201d achieved with the participation of the South African company Fly Modern Ark in the management of Mozambique Airlines (LAM).<\/p>\n

Fly Modern Ark has been operating in LAM since April, in an attempt to make the Mozambican company profitable.<\/p>\n

Among the gains made, Magala pointed to a reduction in LAM fares of more than 30 per cent on some routes, and an increase in the size of the LAM fleet, with the acquisition of two Bombardier JRC 900 aircraft, each able to carry 89 passengers.<\/p>\n

Magala said the first of these aircraft began operations in June, and the second will enter LAM\u2019s service this month.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Maputo at the inauguration of the LAM route between Maputo and Lusaka, Magala said there have also been improvements in LAM\u2019s operational efficiency, expressed in a reduction in the number of cancelled or delayed flights, and a consolidation of punctuality.<\/p>\n

The Minister was optimistic that LAM will soon be flying to other destinations, including on intercontinental routes.<\/p>\n

With the new management, said Magala, expenditure had been reined in, and here had been a considerable increase in revenue, with a consequent improvement in LAM\u2019s financial situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cMiraculously, the company that was regarded as technically bankrupt three months ago, is today technically solvent\u201d, he declared.<\/p>\n

Magala added that excursion packages are being developed to various points in Mozambique which could meet the demand from users of the Maputo-Lusaka route.<\/p>\n

He was convinced that, with the flights to Lusaka, which also stop in Harare, the government is launching a powerful instrument to drive the development of southern Africa. It would help make viable initiatives that depend on rapid connectivity between Maputo, Harare and Lusaka.<\/p>\n
