Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation on Tuesday lamented the extradition of former Finance Minister Manuel Chang to the US, noting that the country may have been \u201cdamaged\u201d by the former minister in the case of debts hidden.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there was anything [done by Manuel Chang] in the sense of harming the homeland, it was here\u201d, said Vero\u0301nica Macamo, speaking to journalists today as representative of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the ruling party, after submitting the organisation\u2019s candidacy for the October municipal elections.<\/p>\n

Noting that the Mozambican State tried to extradite the former finance minister to its jurisdiction, Macamo underlined that the decision of the South African court to hand over Manuel Chang to the US must be respected, as it is an exercise of state sovereignty.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat prevailed, prevailed,\u201d she emphasized, on the decision of the justice in South Africa, where Chang, 63 years old, has been detained since December 2018.<\/p>\n

The former Mozambican finance minister will be extradited to the US this week to answer for his involvement in the hidden debt scandal, an official source told Lusa.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, we can confirm that he will be extradited to the US this week,\u201d Athlenda Mathe, spokeswoman for the South African Police National Command (SAPS), told Lusa.<\/p>\n
