Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Frelimo, Mozambique\u2019s ruling party, said on Tuesday that the end of the disarmament of the largest opposition party, Renamo, will allow the local elections on 11 October to be \u201cfair and free\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that the environment we now live in will provide not only fair and free elections, but also our democracy,\u201d said Vero\u0301nica Macamo in her capacity as electoral representative [mandata\u0301ria] of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) at the National Election Commission (CNE).<\/p>\n

Macamo was speaking after registering the ruling party\u2019s candidacy for the October 11 municipal elections.<\/p>\n

The scrutiny process will take place \u201cat a special moment\u201d, when the weapons are buried, she emphasised.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe showed the world and, above all, ourselves, that brothers have to be real brothers, that they treat each other with love and the love of brothers and that they will resolve their differences through dialogue,\u201d Macamo emphasised.<\/p>\n

On October 11, Mozambique will hold its sixth round of municipal elections, with voting taking place in all 65 municipalities in the country.<\/p>\n

The last Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) base \u2013 in the district of Gorongosa, in the country\u2019s central Sofala province \u2013 was closed on June 15, marking the conclusion of the disarmament and demobilisation of the party\u2019s guerrillas.<\/p>\n

A total of 5,221 Renamo guerrillas returned home as part of the process.<\/p>\n

This is to be followed by a reintegration phase, which includes the commencement of pensions being paid to demobilised soldiers.<\/p>\n
