Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s ruling Frelimo Party will elect its mayoral candidates for the October municipal elections over the coming weekend, according to the Party\u2019s spokesperson, Ludmila Maguni.<\/p>\n

She told a Thursday press conference in Maputo that the short lists contain about 200 candidates for mayor in the 65 municipalities. She promised that the successful candidates will be announced by Monday.<\/p>\n

The inner-party elections will take place in the Frelimo zone committees in the municipalities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a process that involves about 10,000 Frelimo members in all the committees\u201d, Maguni said, \u201cas well as the more than four million members of the party, and all the Mozambican population\u201d.<\/p>\n

She did not say how the \u201cmore than four million members\u201d claimed by Frelimo would take part in the elections, much less \u201call the Mozambican population\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cMunicipal elections are an important landmark in the development of our country\u201d, she added, \u201csince they allow the local communities to participate in taking decisions that affect their lives\u201d.<\/p>\n

Maguni claimed that everything is ready to guarantee a Frelimo victory in the 65 municipalities.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrelimo believes in the importance of internal democracy\u201d, she said, \u201cin which all members have the opportunity to choose their representatives, thus promoting transparency and conferring legitimacy on the internal election process\u201d.<\/p>\n

Maguni claimed that Frelimo has capable candidates who can run any of the municipalities which are currently in the hands of the opposition.<\/p>\n
