Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>According to data from the company CFM, more than 5.5 million people used rail transport in Mozambique in 2022, an increase of 81% compared to the previous year due to the easing of Covid-19 prevention measures.<\/p>\n

According to the report and accounts for 2022 by CFM, the Mozambican state-owned port and railway company, movement in rail transport in the whole of last year amounted to 5,568,969 passengers, 98% of the administration\u2019s forecast.<\/p>\n

CFM attributes at least some of the 81% increase to investments reinforcing transport capacity in the south and centre of the country.<\/p>\n

The Indian press meanwhile reported this week that the state-owned company Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) submitted the lowest bid, valued at US$61 million (\u20ac55 million euros), in the CFM tender for ten new locomotives and 150 wagons.<\/p>\n

According to the CFM report and accounts, the Mozambican rail network transported a total of 24.6 million gross tons of cargo in 2022, a year-on-year increase of 30% compared to 2021.<\/p>\n

The port terminals managed by CFM handled 13.21 million tons during the 2022 financial year, an increase of around 6% compared to 2021, \u201cthe result of the new investments that have been made by the company\u201d.<\/p>\n

Despite the \u201cnegative factors that characterized the first months\u201d of 2022, such as cyclones, derailments, moderate supply of rail freight and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the company\u2019s management claims to have invested 7,925.1 million meticais (\u20ac112.2 million euros) \u201cto revitalize and renew assets\u201d in its rail and port projects.<\/p>\n
