Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Health authorities in Mozambique have declared an outbreak of cholera in two more districts \u2013 Moci\u0301mboa da Praia and Mueda in Cabo Delgado province. The disease has caused 141 deaths across the country since last September.<\/p>\n

According to a source from the Ministry of Health quoted by the local press, the declaration was made after confirming the local presence of the agent that causes the disease, and covers the entire province of Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country. Since September of last year, 1,168 cases have been registered, with three deaths, a lethality rate of 0.3%.<\/p>\n

Figures updated on July 24 by the Ministry of Health and consulted today by Lusa reveal that the cholera epidemic has since last September caused 141 deaths in ten Mozambican provinces and the city of Maputo. There have been 33,453 diagnosed cases, of which 22,748 had to be hospitalised.<\/p>\n

Up to the same date, most of these cases (13,400 diagnosed and 38 dead) were registered in the province of Zambe\u0301zia, in the centre of the country, especially affected since the destruction caused by Cyclone Freddy in February and March, followed by Sofala province (7,527 cases and 30 deaths) and Niassa province (3,501 cases and 25 deaths).<\/p>\n

The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Tedros Ghebreyesus, highlighted in Maputo on July 13 the efforts of Mozambique, and its president, Filipe Niyusi, to control the epidemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very happy to see a head of state who is very committed to health. He is one of the few leaders in the world who assumes this commitment and is directly involved in health issues,\u201d Tedros Tedros Ghebreyesus declared.<\/p>\n

For the director-general of WHO, the Mozambican executive had managed the epidemic, aggravated by the impact of Cyclone Freddy, remarkably.<\/p>\n

\u201cI salute the Mozambican President and the Minister of Health [Armindo Tiago] for their leadership in managing the cholera epidemic. In the same period, cases of polio were registered and they were also controlled, after being detected in advance. There haven\u2019t been any cases now since August,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Mozambique is considered one of the countries in the world most severely affected by climate change, a situation which particularly impacts the infrastructure and services designed to prevent disease.<\/p>\n

Cholera causes severe diarrhoea, which is treatable, but which can cause death from dehydration. The disease is caused, in large part, by the ingestion of food and water contaminated by poor sanitation.<\/p>\n

In May, the World Health Organization warned that the world will have a shortage of vaccines against cholera by 2025, and that one billion people spread across 43 countries worldwide were in danger of becoming infected.<\/p>\n
