Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>A fire broke out yesterday afternoon in Ponta Mamoli, district of Matutu\u00edne, Maputo province, which was quelled today (August 13) , the administrator of the Maputo Environmental Protection Area (APA) Lu\u00eds Buchir told Noticias..<\/p>\n

In a brief telephone contact, Buchir assured that there was no record of human victims, although three precarious houses had burned down.<\/p>\n

The origins of the fire, which reached uninhabited areas, are still unknown, but it is suspected that some community members might have set up fires, used as a means to scare away reptiles, which might have spread, due to the winds.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fire started at 1:00 p.m. yesterday (12) and was extinguished at around 3:00 a.m. today. It was a great battle. The community was mobilised, for coordinated work between the administrations of the area and those of the district of Matutuine,\u201d said Lu\u00eds Buchir. He added that the rain that fell in the area greatly helped to extinguish the fire.<\/p>\n

The APA administrator explained that the affected area is of difficult access by car, so the community played a major part in preventing the destruction of public and private infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now there are teams on the ground assessing the damage to communities and the environment, as well as quantifying the areas affected by the fire,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Maputo Environmental Protection Area covers 600,000 hectares and includes the Maputo Special Reserve and the Ponta do Ouro and the Inhaca Marine Reserves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
