Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) will finance a \u20ac1.8 million project to improve road safety in Maputo, including the installation of cameras for speed control and detection of offences.<\/p>\n

According to the bidding notice for construction, consulted today by Lusa, the tender launched by the South Korean agency is open until 14 August and provides for work to be carried out, with completion in ten months, in eight locations in the neighbouring cities of Maputo and Matola.<\/p>\n

Specifically, it consists of installing zebra crossings, rumble strips, traffic lights, and cameras to \u201cprevent speeding and traffic sign violations\u201d.<\/p>\n

The works under the \u201cRoad Safety Improvement and Institutional Capacity Building Project of Mozambique\u201d promoted by KOICA, with the support of the Mozambican government, also include the installation of LED lighting in school areas, resurfacing roads, pedestrian bridges and central barriers on the roads to prevent irregular crossing.<\/p>\n

The project, according to the tender notice, is valued at more than $2 million .<\/p>\n

Mozambique recorded a total of 387 deaths from road accidents in the first half of this year, an 11% reduction compared to the 434 deaths recorded in the same period of 2022, according to a statement from the ministry of transport.<\/p>\n

The deaths resulted from a total of 357 road accidents recorded in the same period, which also caused 295 serious injuries and 412 minor injuries, according to the report of the ministry of transport and communications of Mozambique, previously reported by Lusa.<\/p>\n

The ministry points to speeding, mechanical deficiencies, poor pedestrian crossing, priority cutting, irregular overtaking, and drunk driving as the main causes of road accidents.<\/p>\n

According to the summary, the rate of road accidents and their consequences has decreased in 2023, compared to last year, a factor that results from the mitigation actions implemented by the authorities.<\/p>\n

Among these actions are \u201cspeed and drink-driving checks, vehicle roadworthiness checks, awareness-raising campaigns on the use of helmets by cyclists and motorcyclists, and road safety talks\u201d.<\/p>\n
