Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The second series of Xiquitsi Classical Music Season concerts has ended with the operetta \u201cOrpheus in the Underworld\u201d, a satire on the myth of Orpheus, with music by Jacques Offenbach (1819\u2013 1880) whose culminating \u201cGalop infernal\u201d gained notoriety in the last decade of the 19th century when Paris cabarets like the Moulin Rouge and Folies Berge\u0300re adopted it to accompany the risque\u0301 \u2018Cancan\u2019 dance.<\/p>\n

Orpheus in The Underworld was staged at Cine Teatro Scala in Maputo. An irreverent parody of Gluck\u2019s opera Orfeo ed Euridice (1762), the opera is a lampoon of the ancient legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. In this version Orpheus is not the son of Apollo but a rustic violin teacher who is glad to be rid of his wife, Eurydice, when she is abducted by the god of the underworld, Pluto, and has to be bullied by public opinion into trying to rescue her.<\/p>\n

The performance was the last of the second series of Xiquitsi Project classical music concerts, which have enjoyed the support of Absa Bank Mozambique for over six years, bringing a cultural experience of an international nature and broadening the artistic offering available to students and society.<\/p>\n

Over these years, Xiquitsi and Absa Bank have provided enriching experiences through the arts and cultural diversity, expanding personal knowledge in an interactive and engaging way, while supporting the artistic community and promoting educational opportunities.<\/p>\n
