Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican government is mobilizing over 20 million dollars to build a fishing port in Angoche district, in the northern Province of Nampula, according to the Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Lidia Cardoso.<\/p>\n

The minister said on Tuesday, during the delivery of fishery equipment in Angoche, that \u201cthe project already exists. A public tender was launched and some candidates had been approved to start the process. However, the initial budget is no longer enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2019, the previous Minister of Fisheries, Agostinho Mondlane, claimed that 33 million dollars was available to build the port.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fishing port is strategic, taking into account that only two fishing ports are operational in the country, in Maputo in the south, and in Beira in the central province of Sofala. Having a fishing port means that we will also have dry or wet docks for ship repair\u201d, said Cardoso.<\/p>\n

The minister added that Quelimane port, in the central province of Zambezia, has difficulties in terms of infrastructures, but \u201cwe are trying to solve them. It is difficult for the fishermen from the coastal zone of Angoche to resort to Maputo and Beira for the maintenance of their boats.\u201d<\/p>\n

In order to boost the fishery sector, according to data unveiled by the minister last week, about 90 million meticais (1.4 million US dollars, at the current exchange rate) has been invested in the northern province of Nampula alone.<\/p>\n
