Renamo organised a parade through the streets of Vulankulo to present its mayoral candidate, Joaquim Quinito Vilanculo, on Sunday, 13 August. Along the route, a police vehicle appeared and blocked the march, causing a conflict which came close to physical clashes, as shown in this video.<\/p>\n

The police blocked an open truck that was carrying members of Renamo, but were unable to present the passage of dozens of motorbikes that were accompanying the march. Moments later the unit of the national police (PRM) received reinforcements from the local Municipal Police.<\/p>\n

In the midst of discussions and shoving, the Renamo youths were shouting \u201cWe\u2019re going to march! Mozambique is ours!\u201d; \u201cWe are presenting our Mayor, who will be elected on October 11!\u201d, \u201cThe struggle continues!\u201d; \u201cYou have no shame!\u201d; \u201cThis is a disgrace for Vilankulo!\u201d; \u201cFrelimo\u2019s gone crazy!\u201d; \u201cIf you provoke us, we shall reply with our hands!\u201d<\/p>\n

This falls into one of the recognised categories of \u201celectoral violence\u201d, raising fears that this year\u2019s municipal elections may be characterised by violence.<\/p>\n

CNE approves municipal candidates<\/b><\/p>\n

After the checks on the regularity and authenticity of the documents in the files of each of the election candidates, the CNE will meet tomorrow (Wednesday, 16 August) to approve the decision which accepts or rejects the lists of candidates. The final list should be drawn up and distributed at the end of the day, and the lists of candidates will be posted at the premises of the electoral bodies on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The CIP Elections Bulletin knows that in principle the lists of all 22 political parties, coalitions of parties and groups of citizens were approved. There was an unsuccessful attempt, inside the Nampula Provincial Elections Commission, to disqualify the \u201cAssociation of Friends of Amurrane for a Better Mozambique \u2013 KO\u0301XUKHURO\u201d, supposedly because some of the candidates did not write their full names on the lists. But on their documents everything was in order.<\/p>\n
