Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Ac\u0327ucareira da Maragra, in Maputo province, lost about 3.6 billion meticais when rains devastated the sugarcane production fields and equipment earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Data provided to \u2018Noti\u0301cias\u2019 by the general director of the company, Filipe Raposo, indicate that 470,000 tons of sugar cane were lost in the fields, representing a loss of 1.6 billion meticais.<\/p>\n

These numbers reinforce the information previously shared by the sugar company to the effect that, the floods having happened in the second month of the year, it had not seen any advantage from the last production campaign.<\/p>\n

The losses, according to Filipe Raposo, seriously affected the company\u2019s sustainability, which is why in April it announced the possibility of suspending operations and reducing the work-force.<\/p>\n

Work in the end continued, but the sugar factory laid off most of its workforce, which fell from the previous 500 to the current 140.<\/p>\n

Given the magnitude of the damage, the company is not yet in a position to predict the outlines of its next production campaign, according to Noti\u0301cias.<\/p>\n

The company, in Manhic\u0327a, usually produces around 80,000 thousand tons of refined sugar annually, from 460,000 tons of cane.<\/p>\n
