Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s minister of mineral resources and energy, Carlos Zacarias, called on Monday for a \u201cvisible contribution\u201d to the exploitation of the potential of the area in the life of the population and the development of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wide value chain associated with mineral resources and energy continuously feeds society\u2019s expectations for a visible contribution of our sector in the economic and social development of the country,\u201d said Zacarias.<\/p>\n

He was speaking at the opening of the eighth coordinating council of the ministry of mineral resources and energy, which kicked off on Monday in the city of Lichinga, Niassa province, in northern Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must adjust and adapt our performance as a sector responsible for promoting the development and exploitation of mineral and energy resources existing in abundance in the country,\u201d emphasised Carlos Zacarias.<\/p>\n

Zacarias said that the Mozambican population expects to see natural resources generating gains in their quality of life.<\/p>\n

The minister pointed to hydrocarbons as an asset for the country\u2019s social and economic development.<\/p>\n

Mineral resources will \u201ccontribute greatly to a better future for our country\u201d, emphasised Carlos Zacarias.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must have a better strategic vision of how their exploitation should be done to ensure that the benefits for the country and Mozambicans are maximised,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The call by the minister for the gains from the country\u2019s natural resources to be exploited in favour of the communities is made in a context where several civil society organisations have criticised what they consider a tax regime that is too favourable to multinationals involved in hydrocarbon exploration in the country.<\/p>\n
