Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican police have detained a suspect involved in a kidnapping that took place in 2021 in Manica province, in central Mozambique, a source from the corporation told Lusa on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had an arrest warrant against him for kidnapping a [citizen of] Indian [ origin] in 2021,\u201d said Paulo Candieiro, spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).<\/p>\n

The suspect, whose nationality is still unknown, was detained by the public protection police on Wednesday, along with four other people with whom he carried out robberies in the province, according to SERNIC<\/p>\n

\u201cHe claims to be Mozambican, but he didn\u2019t have any identification document [to prove it],\u201d said Paulo Candieiro.<\/p>\n

Some Mozambican cities, mainly the provincial capitals, have been affected again since 2020 by a wave of kidnappings, mainly targeting businessmen or their family members.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican prime minister, Adriano Maleiane, said in parliament in May that the agents who will work in the unit that will fight kidnappings that affect the country\u2019s main cities have already been selected.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first phase, already completed\u201d, of the creation of the unit to combat kidnapping, \u201cconsisted of the selection of agents\u201d and the next stage will be the specialization of the personnel and will have the support of cooperation partners, he continued.<\/p>\n

At the time, Maleiane said that since 2021, 28 cases of kidnapping have been registered in Mozambique, of which \u201c15 have been fully clarified\u201d.<\/p>\n
