Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s three main political parties (Frelimo, Renamo and MDM) occupy the top positions on the ballot paper for the local elections in October, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) announced in a draw held in Maputo on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the third largest parliamentary party, occupies the first position, the ruling Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) the second, and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the largest opposition force, the third, said Alberto Sabie, deputy coordinator of the CNE\u2019s Commission for Legal and Deontological Affairs, after the draw.<\/p>\n

More than 11,500 candidates from 10 political parties, three coalitions of parties and eight citizens\u2019 groups were accepted by the CNE for the local elections on 11 October.<\/p>\n

The electoral body also drew lots to \u201cdetermine the distribution of airtime\u201d for the contestants during the election campaign, which will run from 26 September to 08 October.<\/p>\n

More than 8.7 million Mozambican voters are registered to vote in the sixth local elections, below the initial projection of 9.8 million voters, according to CNE data.<\/p>\n

Voters will choose 65 new mayors, including in 12 new municipalities, in addition to the 53 that already exist.<\/p>\n

In the 2018 local elections, Frelimo won in 44 of the 53 municipalities and the opposition in only nine \u2013 the case of Renamo, with eight, and the MDM, the third party, with one.<\/p>\n
