Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s government has authorised from 14 September the introduction of four more toll plazas on three of the country\u2019s roads, charging between 50 and 1,000 meticais (\u20ac0.72 to \u20ac14.40).<\/p>\n

In a joint order of 18 August from the ministries of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources and Economy and Finance, to which Lusa had access today, the government recognises the \u201cneed to set toll rates\u201d at the Nwamakevele, Zimbene, Lionde and Macarretane toll plazas, on the R453 Macia \u2013 Praia de Bilene, N101 Macia \u2013 Cho\u0301kwe\u0300 and R448 Cho\u0301kwe\u0300 \u2013 Macarretane roads, in Gaza province, \u201cin accordance with the concession contract\u201d.<\/p>\n

In each of the new plazas \u2013 which join the 12 already operated by Rede Via\u0301ria de Moc\u0327ambique (REVIMO) \u2013 tolls will be charged at 50 meticais (\u20ac0.72 ) for class 1 vehicles (light vehicles) and from 200 meticais (\u20ac2.88) to 1,000 meticais (\u20ac14.40) for classes 2 to 4 (heavy vehicles).<\/p>\n

The same order provides for a 75% discount for collective and semi-collective passenger transport, tractors with and without trailers, and for frequent users, depending on the number of monthly journeys, discounts of between 7% and 60%.<\/p>\n

In another joint order, issued on the same date and taking effect on 1 September, the tolls at the Moamba and Maputo plazas on the N4 road were increased by 240 to 1,800 meticais (\u20ac3.46 to \u20ac25.90) and 40 to 550 meticais (\u20ac0.57 to \u20ac7.90) respectively.<\/p>\n

Lusa reported on 18 August that REVIMO\u2019s revenue, which is responsible for the construction, conservation and operation of several national roads, grew 67.3% in 2022 to 1.9 billion meticais (\u20ac27.3 million) with the new tolls in place.<\/p>\n

According to the 2022 report and accounts, REVIMO ended the year managing 667.5 kilometres of roads in five provinces, with 12 tolls, six more in the space of a year, and an 181% increase in annual average daily traffic, which rose to 48,075 vehicles.<\/p>\n

Overall, the volume of traffic on the roads managed by REVIMO increased to 17,547,355 vehicles last year, \u201cmainly due to the start of the Maputo ring road toll\u201d.<\/p>\n

The company, which has 562 workers and is 70% owned by the Mozambique Road Fund, in addition to the central ban\u2019s [Bank of Mozambique] Pension Fund and the National Social Security Institute (INSS), each with a 15% stake, saw profits grow by almost 15% in 2022, to more than 144.3 million meticais (\u20ac2 million).<\/p>\n

The concessions handed over by the state to REVIMO involve 287 kilometres of the N6, between Beira and Machipanda, 71.4 kilometres of the Maputo ring road, 12 kilometres of the R804, between Marracuene and Macaneta, 187 kilometres of the Maputo \u2013 KaTembe Bridge and connecting roads, 32 kilometres of the R453, between Macia and Praia do Bilene, 61.7 kilometres of the N101, between Macia and Cho\u0301kwe\u0300, and 21.8 kilometres of the R448, between Cho\u0301kwe\u0300 and Macarretane.<\/p>\n

The message from the board of directors contained in the document states that REVIMO \u201ccontinued steadfastly on the path begun in 2019, towards consolidating its role as a strategic partner in the management and profitability of road infrastructure and related services\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe increase in toll plazas enabled another milestone in REVIMO\u2019s growth to be reached: the number of vehicles serviced on the roads under our management reached 17.5 million, which was 181.1% above the figure recorded in 2021,\u201d the message adds.<\/p>\n

The administration also guarantees that \u201cthe major milestone for 2023 will be the completion of the maintenance work on the Macia \u2013 Praia do Bilene and Cho\u0301kwe\u0300 \u2013 Macarretane roads and the rehabilitation of the Macia \u2013 Cho\u0301kwe\u0300 road\u201d, infrastructures \u201cthat will contribute to making better use of the agricultural potential of Cho\u0301kwe\u0300 and the tourist potential of Praia do Bilene\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the completion of the works on these roads, we will start operating the N\u2019waMaquevele, Zimbene, Lionde and Macarretane toll plazas. The prospects of accelerated growth in the economy and the start of management of new infrastructures challenge us to continually improve the quality of the services provided to users and create the conditions to embrace more future projects,\u201d the administration also said.<\/p>\n
