Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A woman suffering pregnancy complications burned to death on Wednesday evening when the ambulance in which she was being transported in Nhamatanda district, Sofala province, caught fire. Two other patients and two health technicians were injured but are out of danger.<\/p>\n

The tragic death occurred in the early evening. Health technicians from the local hospital were giving the pregnant woman oxygen in the ambulance when the cylinder exploded. The fire quickly spread throughout the vehicle, which was also conveying other patients to Beira Central Hospital.<\/p>\n

Local firefighters were promptly called, but failed to save the pregnant woman, the fire engine not having the necessary hoses. Desperate family members and hospital staff tried in vain to extinguish the fire with buckets of water.<\/p>\n

The ambulance was carrying two other patients plus two health technicians, which Nhamatanda district administrator Adamo Ossumane said had suffered only minor injuries and were already back with their families.<\/p>\n

Ossumane said that a commission would be set up this Thursday to fully investigate the cause of the fire.<\/p>\n
