Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Norwegian Embassy signed yesterday two agreements worth a total of NOK 63 million (approximately $6 million) with partners GAIN and the Aga Khan Foundation. These additional funds are dedicated to supporting food security and are a direct response to the food crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine, particularly affecting developing economies like Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The announcement of this extraordinary package was made by Norway\u2019s Minister of International Development, Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, during her visit to Mozambique in May of this year, demonstrating Norway\u2019s commitment to supporting countries facing significant food security challenges due to global events.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to follow through on this commitment with the signing today of two agreements with the Aga Khan Foundation and GAIN, and we look forward to seeing tangible results from these interventions,\u201d said Ambassador Haakon Gram-Johannessen during the signing ceremony.<\/p>\n

Gaspar Cuambe, National Director of GAIN, emphasized: \u201cSince we began collaborating with the embassy, we have been active in various areas, with a focus on market development and financial support for small and medium-sized enterprises. We are also committed to mobilizing the entire private sector in Cabo Delgado to boost the production of nutritious and safe foods.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Aga Khan Foundation expresses its gratitude to Norway for our enduring collaboration dating back to 2004 when we decided to join forces to support Cabo Delgado province. With great pride and satisfaction, I can affirm that since then, we have maintained a strong partnership. This signing represents another block in the ongoing construction of this joint effort that we are building,\u201d declared Agostinho Momade, National Director of the Aga Khan Foundation.<\/p>\n

The project aims to increase the consumption of safe and nutritious food among vulnerable populations affected by conflicts in Northern Mozambique. The project\u2019s scope includes the rehabilitation of key food system infrastructures and utilizes these spaces to stimulate entrepreneurship and behaviour change that promotes greater gender equity. Local producers and entrepreneurs will receive support to establish and expand businesses specializing in safe and nutritious foods. A special focus is on connecting producers, processors, and buyers, both within and outside the province, to make these foods available to consumers. An additional contribution of NOK 30,000,000 (approximately USD 2.8 million) has been allocated to this endeavour.<\/p>\n

The project aims to enhance food security and economic resilience in Cabo Delgado by increasing the availability of highly skilled mid-level technicians and stronger livelihoods for small farmers in the Southern region of Cabo Delgado. The proposed activities will empower students from the Agricultural Institute, IABil, with skills and competencies to work as agricultural technicians and agribusiness entrepreneurs, while also improving agricultural practices and techniques in surrounding communities, thereby contributing to increased productivity in the targeted geographical areas. An additional contribution of NOK 33,000,000 (approximately USD 3.2 million)<\/p>\n
