Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The National Social Security Institute (INSS), in the central city of Beira, has collected over the last six months 74.1 million meticais (1.1 million US dollars, at the current exchange rate) as the result of debt payment by various institutions.<\/p>\n

According to the INSS delegate in Beira, Jaime Chicamisse, cited by Monday\u2019s issue of the Maputo daily \u201cNoti\u0301cias\u201d, this amount was collected both judicially, and extra-judicially.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe amount was collected from a total of 2,785 contributors or companies, corresponding to coverage of 150.29 percent of the goal planned for this year\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Any debt, Chicamisse explained, is dynamic and may gradually decrease or increase, following a coercive charge through the courts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are encouraging employers to pay the debt in question, since some of them discount three percent from their employees\u2019 wages for social security contributions, but never channel the money to the INSS\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey never channel the money, neither the sums deducted from the workers\u2019 wages, or the four per cent which is their responsibility as employers\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

The phenomenon, he said, constitutes a crime of abuse of trust. However, about 20 companies have already been sued and their cases are now before the courts.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, some of these entities are paying their debts. The INSS appreciates the contribution by the courts and by the attorney-general\u2019s office\u201d, Chicamisse said.<\/p>\n
