Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>In August \u2013 and for the fourth consecutive month \u2013 inflation slowed down in Mozambique, but the cost of goods and services did not fall, Jornal @Vedade learning that they remained as high as at the peak of the inflationary spiral in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The Consumer Price Index (IPC) reveals that, during the month of August, year-on-year inflation was 4.93 percent, following on from 5.67 percent in July, 6.81 percent in June and 8.23 percent in May 2023.<\/p>\n

Data collected in August by the National Statistics Institute (INE) in the cities of Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Quelimane, Tete, Chimoio, Xai-Xai and in Inhambane province indicate that \u201cthe country recorded deflation in the order of 0.12 per cent. The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages division was most notable, contributing to the total monthly variation with around 0.17 negative percentage points\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, the @Verdade newspaper learned that despite this \u201cdeflation\u201d, the cost of living is not falling in Mozambique, the IPC itself revealing that, since the beginning of the year, Mozambique \u201chas recorded price increases of around 2.10 percent. The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Restaurants, Hotels, Cafes and Similar and Transport sectors saw the biggest price increase, contributing 0.52 percentage points, 0.40 percentage points and 0.35 positive percentage points respectively.<\/p>\n
