Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Islamic State terrorist organisation claimed on Sunday, through its propaganda channels, to have executed 11 Christians in Mozambique, in the district of Moci\u0301mboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado province.<\/p>\n

The terrorist group, which has been operating in Cabo Delgado province for almost six years, also claims to have bombed members of the Mozambican Armed Forces.<\/p>\n

Local sources heard today by Lusa say that the attack took place at around 3 pm on Friday (2 pm Lisbon time) in Naquitenge, a village in the interior of the district of Moci\u0301mboa da Praia, but do not confirm that it was a raid against members of the Mozambican army.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they arrived there, they called a meeting. The people in the village didn\u2019t know they were terrorists, and after that, they started separating Christians from Muslims on the basis of their names. After that, they opened fire on the Christians,\u201d a source who lost his nephew in the attack told Lusa.<\/p>\n

Although Islamic State claims the deaths of 11 people, sources heard by Lusa speak of at least 12 dead at the scene and several wounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey shot people. Some people were injured and fled into the woods. It\u2019s one of the most vicious attacks we\u2019ve ever heard of,\u201d another source from Moci\u0301mboa da Praia, who has a relative who managed to escape from Naquitenge during the attack, told Lusa.<\/p>\n

The district of Moci\u0301mboa da Praia was where armed groups carried out their first attack in October 2017 and has long been described as the rebels\u2019 base.<\/p>\n

Moci\u0301mboa da Praia is located 70 kilometres south of the construction area of the natural gas exploration project in Afungi, Palma, led by TotalEnergies.<\/p>\n

Mozambique\u2019s ministry of defence has yet to comment on the attack.<\/p>\n

This raid comes less than a month after the announcement, on 25 August, by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Mozambique, Joaquim Rivas Mangrasse, of the elimination of the leader of terrorism in the country, Mozambican Bonomade Machude Omar, along with other members of the terrorist group\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

Bonomade Machude Omar, considered to be the leader of the radical Islamic State group in Mozambique, was targeted by the second phase of the Mozambican army\u2019s so-called \u201cGolpe Duro II\u201d operation.<\/p>\n

The extremist leader was described by several experts as \u201ca symbiosis of brutality and vigilante\u201d and was on the United States\u2019 list of \u201cglobal terrorists\u201d and the target of European Union sanctions.<\/p>\n

In August 2021, the United States included Bonomade Machude Omar, also known as Abu Sulayfa Muhammad and Ibn Omar, on the list of \u201cSpecially Designated Global Terrorists\u201d (SDGT).<\/p>\n

The province of Cabo Delgado has been facing armed insurgency for almost six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.<\/p>\n

On the ground in Cabo Delgado, the Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique have been fighting terrorism \u2013 in attacks that have been taking place since October 2017 and which are hampering the progress of natural gas production projects in the region \u2013 since July 2021, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).<\/p>\n

The conflict in northern Mozambique has already displaced a million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and caused around 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, while the Mozambican President this week admitted to \u201cmore than 2,000\u201d fatalities.<\/p>\n
