Africa-Press<\/a> – Mozambique<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Vanessa Mangueira, the wife of Mozambique\u2019s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, has categorically denied a story in the weekly paper \u201cEvidencias\u201d that her husband had beaten her up.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvidencias\u201d devoted an entire page to this scoop, claiming that Tonela had attacked her wife so savagely that he knocked her teeth out. But, despite the paper\u2019s name the story was based, not on any real evidence, but on entirely anonymous sources. The paper did not bother to speak to either Mangeira or Tonela.<\/p>\n

Interviewed in Wednesday\u2019s issue of the independent newssheet \u201cCarta de Mocambique\u201d, Mangueira said the entire story was fictional. The paper also printed a photo of the smiling Mangueira, showing that none of her teeth are missing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lie\u201d, she said. \u201cI\u2019m fine. I haven\u2019t been attacked physically or emotionally, or in any other way\u201d.<\/p>\n

She and he husband were both in good health \u201cand happy with the life we have chosen, looking after our children and our lives\u201d.<\/p>\n

She added that the couple reserve the right to sue \u201cEvidencias\u201d for libel.<\/p>\n

But the damage has already been done. The \u201cEvidencias\u201d story has circulated widely on social media, where many people have taken the attitude that \u201cif if appears in the papers, it must be true\u201d. The tale of Tonela\u2019s alleged brutality has been used by some Facebook enthusiasts to damn the entire government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
