Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The company Aeroportos de Moc\u0327ambique has announced the impending rehabilitation and modernization of all its infrastructure, while analysts maintain that, given the company\u2019s \u201ccalamitous\u201d financial situation, this should not be a priority.<\/p>\n

According to the company, rehabilitation and modernization is to begin this year, with the start of work scheduled for the third quarter.<\/p>\n

However, the company faces significant financial challenges, accumulating losses of almost 820.5 million meticais (around \u20ac12 million) in 2022. Given the economic context in the country, several analysts argue that the rehabilitation and modernization of infrastructure should not be a priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe net worth of the company Aeroportos de Moc\u0327ambique is calamitous,\u201d says Mozambican economist Cle\u0301sio Foia, highlighting that the company is technically bankrupt.<\/p>\n

The \u201cwhite elephants\u201d<\/p>\n

On the other hand, analyst Dereck Mulatinho recalls the Filipe Jacinto Nyusi airport in Chongoene, Gaza province, the most recently built in the country, which has failed to generate profits for the state.<\/p>\n

Mulatinho admits that the building of this airport was part of a strategy to expand and modernise airport infrastructure so as to attract new customers, but \u201cthis strategy proved to be ineffective, as it failed to generate demand\u201d.<\/p>\n

Regarding Nacala airport, also considered a \u201cwhite elephant\u201d, economist Cle\u0301sio Foia recalls that \u201cit also does not generate revenue and operates well below its capacity\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mulatinho proposes a different way to revitalise Aeroportos de Moc\u0327ambique. \u201cPerhaps, divide the company into two, one that could manage the aerodrome component and the other that could manage the airport component,\u201d he suggests<\/p>\n

In its latest financial (2022) report, the company claims that the airport sector, in particular, recorded a significant recovery in traffic, with an average growth of 25%, after a period of stagnation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
