Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Judicial Court of the City of Maputo yesterday released, subject to proof of identity and residence, the six students detained for contempt of the authorities after promoting a march against \u201cinhumane conditions\u201d at the boarding facilities of the Higher School of Nautical Sciences.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe court decided to release the students, but the case continues,\u201d activist Quite\u0301ria Guirengane, who is organising legal support for the students, told Lusa. \u201cOn Monday, the court will hear other participants in the case, with emphasis on the school director and the police officers who detained the students.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group was reportedly detained on the school grounds after organising a march addressing the Ministry of Transport and Communication, which oversees the institution, demanding better conditions at the boarding facilities.<\/p>\n

One student interviewed by Lusa on Thursday described \u201cinhumane conditions\u201d including the lack of food and poor hygiene, adding that the students had tried repeatedly to alert the institution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were just complaining about our rights, rights that are provided for in the notices. In the documents, it is written that we have the right to food, for example,\u201d said the student, waiting outside the court with others from the institution on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

Contacted by Lusa, the institution\u2019s management promised a reaction at \u201can opportune moment\u201d.<\/p>\n

The accused students, aged between 21 and 25 and from the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Maputo and Inhambane, all live at the school\u2019s boarding house in the Mozambican capital.<\/p>\n
