Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Kenyan citizens convicted and serving prison sentences in Mozambique will be extradited to their home country, according to an agreement approved by the Mozambican government and its Kenyan counterpart.<\/p>\n

According to a document from the office of the President of Kenya, William Ruto, the measure was approved on Monday, authorizing identical agreements with Mozambique and with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).<\/p>\n

The agreement with Mozambique, the note says, is result of an understanding reached in August, in Maputo, by the Kenyan President and his Mozambican counterpart, Filipe Nyusi.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs our nation\u2019s diaspora population grows, and in an effort to ensure that all offenders sentenced abroad can serve their sentences at home, where they are closer to the support of their families, the Presidency considered and approved the signing of the Extradition Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kenya and the Government of the UAE and the Extradition Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kenya and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique\u201d, reads the document.<\/p>\n

The governments of Kenya and Mozambique agreed on August 10 in Maputo to exchange information and cooperate in defence matters and in the fight against terrorism, which plagues both countries.<\/p>\n

In August, in addition to the agreement on prison matters, both governments signed cooperation instruments in the political and economic sector, on fisheries and the blue economy, on agriculture and livestock, on energy and on capacity building in the public sector.<\/p>\n

They also signed cooperation agreements on mutual recognition and exchange of driving licenses, transfer of sentenced persons, mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and cooperation in the field of Defence.<\/p>\n

At the time, Nyusi said that \u201cthe agreements create concrete guidelines for how things should legally work, taking into account the terrorism plaguing both counties.\u201d<\/p>\n

For his part, Ruto said that \u201cterrorism is not a problem limited to our two countries. It\u2019s a global challenge, for the whole continent, and we are proud of the cooperation with our partners in Mozambique.\u201d<\/p>\n
