Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The provincial command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique in Zambe\u0301zia says that the Renamo head of the list for Quelimane municipal elections and current mayor Manuel de Arau\u0301jo was detained for disrupting the normal voting process. The PRM further confirms that it fired tear gas in Gurue\u0300 to restore order and denies that there were any deaths.<\/p>\n

At a press conference called to clarify Manuel de Arau\u0301jo\u2019s alleged arrest, police spokesman Miguel Caetano said that the head of the Renamo list was disrupting voting at polling stations in Campo Primeiro de Maio (known locally as Benfica) and at Coalane primary school.<\/p>\n

The police also allege that Manuel de Arau\u0301jo was seeking to disrupt proceedings at the STAE district delegation warehouse, as a result of which he was taken to the first police station with the aim of clarifying matters, but was not in fact arrested.<\/p>\n

The police have however submitted the case to the Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office for further action.<\/p>\n

Miguel Caetano also confirmed at the press conference that tear gas was fired in Gurue\u0300 to restore order and tranquillity. One person was injured and taken to hospital, but none of the rumoured fatalities occurred.<\/p>\n

Regarding the voting, the police say the process went smoothly, despite five electoral offences, resulting in the same number of detentions.<\/p>\n
