Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican Bar Association (OAM) has expressed \u201cdeep concern at the high level of violence\u201d in the country\u2019s municipal elections.<\/p>\n

A statement issued on Saturday, and signed by the OAM chairperson, Carlos Martins, warned of \u201cserious damage to our young democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe levels of violence, may not only cast doubt on any election result, but may throw suspicion on the electoral act as a whole, and on the institutions that administer it\u201d, said the OAM.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that it is at times of elections that trust in State institutions, including in the electoral bodies, should be renewed\u201d, it added. But for this to happen \u201cthe institutions must have a republican behaviour, guaranteeing the solidity and credibility of the elections, including the conflict resolution mechanisms, thus avoiding behaviour that might lead to collective tragedy\u201d.<\/p>\n

The violence that had occurred after Wednesday\u2019s voting, the statement continued, showed that neither the main stakeholders, nor the public at large, placed much credit in the election administration bodies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis shows that our democratic process still faces many basic challenges\u201d, said the OAM. \u201cIt is true that violence generates fear, but our central concern is the generalization of hatred, which also leads to violence\u201d.<\/p>\n

The OAM declares that \u201cthe authoritarianism of those contending for power is not the path to democratic consolidation\u201d and insists that elections must be made credible \u201cthrough transparent procedures\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cMozambique and Mozambicans do not need more violence\u201d, it adds.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect that the institutions, all of them, will comply with their responsibilities and respect the principle of legality\u201d, the OAM concluded. \u201cThey all know the legal mechanisms for safeguarding rights, without losing sight of the important role that the international community and international justice institutions play in contexts of extreme violence\u201d.<\/p>\n
