Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Resident doctors at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) are threatening to halt overtime working from November 1st. In response, the hospital management says it is not a hospital matter but that they will appeal to the authorities responsible for paying them.<\/p>\n

Doctors at HCM have complained in a letter to Maputo Central Hospital management of not having receiving payment for overtime and for working on public holidays and weekends, for nine months.<\/p>\n

The doctors complain of physical and psychological exhaustion, as well as mounting travel costs, and announce in the same communication that they have met twice without finding any solution.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was unanimously decided to declare the unavailability of resident doctors for activities outside normal working hours, on holidays and weekends (rounds, emergencies and other relevant activities during this period) from zero hours on November 1, 2023,\u201d the letter goes on to detail.<\/p>\n

A resident doctor is one who is undergoing a period of specialization in a specific area of medicine, working in a hospital or healthcare institution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have in fact received a letter from the doctors,\u201d said HCM director Mouzinho Sai\u0301de.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a problem that has just arisen, and has already been discussed. It is not a hospital issue, so there is no solution yet. When we have results, you will know.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is not known how many professionals are involved, but a source close to HCM assured that the stoppage of extraordinary activities will be carried out by doctors across a number of specialties.<\/p>\n

HCM recognizes the damage that an overtime ban would cause and says it is looking for internal solutions.<\/p>\n

A further problem is the ongoing shortage of blood for transfusions.<\/p>\n
